NIV is the first Bible that I used for study.  Then I switched to the NKJV. Both are very good.  Switching bibles helped me to really hear the words jump out of the pages in a new way.   Some of the verses use different words.  The difference in words has to do with reading level is what I understand about the different translations.   

Gods word is always amazing.
